THE SEWING THREAD CONSUMPTION DETAILS AS BELOW:
The quantity of thread
that will be required for sewing a garment is called sewing thread consumption
for that garment. It is generally expressed in length. To find out the
consumption of thread for production of garment is very much important, because
for determination of costing of garments, need to know or to find out the
consumption of thread.
Actual thread consumption for a unit
length of seam depends on the following factors.
- Stitch Classes
- Stitches per inches (SPI)
- The thickness of the seam (fabric thickness)
- Thread tension
- Thread count (thickness of sewing thread)
So you are suggested to calculate
garment thread consumption by your own. You can develop a multiplying factor
according to your product categories and requirement using the following steps.

2ND AND EASY WAY TO CALCULATION OF THREAD CONSUMPTION:
Machine Wise Per Inch Sewing Thread Required as below-
5 Thread O/L # 1 Inch
= 24 Inch Thread Need
3 Thread O/L # 1 Inch
= 14 Inch Thread Need
4 Thread O/L # 1 Inch
= 22 Inch Thread Need
Lock Stitch Plain
Machine (1 Needle) 1 Inch = 3 Inch Thread Need (Both Top + Bobbin)
Lock Stitch Plain
Machine (2 Needle) 1 Inch = 6 Inch Thread Need (Both Top + Bobbin)
Fit of the Arm Chine
Stitch 1 Inch = 9 Inch Thread Need (Both Top + Bobbin)
Flat Lock Machine (4
Thread) per inch = 22 Inch Thread need
Flat Lock Machine (3
Thread) per inch = 17 Inch Thread need
Bar tack 1/2 Inch = 17
Inch Thread Need
Hole Eyelet 1 Inch =
22 Inch Thread Need (Both Top + Bobbin)
FOR EXAMPLE:
SEWING THREAD CALCULATION FOR T-SHIRT AS BELOW-
THE BELOW POINT NEED TO MAKE BY 4 THREAD OVER LOCK MACHINE-
SHOULDER JOIN
MEASUREMENT = 21 CM
NECK JOIN MEASUREMENT =
60 CM
SLEEVE JOIN MEASUREMENT =
104 CM
SIDE JOIN MEASUREMENT =
66 CM
TOTAL MEASUREMENT WITH 4 THREAD OVER LOCK
MACHINE= 251 CM
THE BELOW POINT NEED TO MAKE BY FLAT LOCK
MACHINE-
SLEEVE HEM = 68 CM
BODY HEM = 96 CM
BACK TAP PIPING &
T/S = 46 CM
FRONT NECK TOP STITCH =
36 CM
TOTAL MEASUREMENT WITH FLAT LOCK MACHINE = 246
CM
THE BELOW POINT NEED TO MAKE BY PLAIN
MACHINE/LOCK STITCH
LABEL STITCHING = 5 CM
NECK RIB STITCHING = 5
CM
TOTAL MEASUREMENT WITH PLAIN MACHINE= 10 CM
SO
Single Needle Lock
Stitch (Plain Machine) = 10/2.54 (Here Note- 1 inch = 2.54 cm)
= 3.94 Inch X 3 (Lock Stitch Plain Machine
(1 Needle) 1 Inch = 3 Inch Thread Need See The Above in Blue) = 11.82 Inch
4 Thread Over Lock
Machine = 251/2.54 = 98.82 X 22 = 2174 Inch
Flat Lock Machine (4
Thread) = 246 / 2.54 = 96.85 X 22 = 2131 Inch
TOTAL 11.82 + 2174 + 2131 = 4316.82/39.39 (Note:
1 Meter = 39.39 inch, Thread always calculated by meters)
= 109.60 MTR + 15%
= 126.04 MTR
(Generally
10% to 15% wastage of thread is added to the consumption derived. This wastage
occurs due to shop-floor conditions like machine running, thread breakage,
repairs, etc)
